Believing God’s Word

Now that we have heard God’s Word and know how to obtain the eternal salvation God desires for all mankind, we must believe what His Word says is true and obey it.  More specifically, an individual must believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and through Him eternal salvation can be found.

Believing is so important, in fact, a person must have belief before he can even be baptized.  We can read of an example of this in Acts 8:26-40 with the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch.  In this story after Philip preaches Jesus to him (verse 35), we read in verses 36 and 37, “Now as they went down the road, they came to some water.  And the eunuch said, ‘See, here is water, what hinders me from being baptized?’  Then Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’  And he answered and said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’”  Verse 38 then tells of the eunuch’s baptism.

Once Philip preached God’s Word to the eunuch, he had to believe in what he was being taught.  It is important to note he was first told to believe and then he could be baptized.  If he didn’t believe the words Philip spoke to him, then there was no point to being baptized.

Belief is so vital to our salvation God says we cannot even please Him without it.  The Hebrew writer states in Hebrews 11:6, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.”  In order for us to be rewarded with the eternal salvation God’s wants us to obtain, we must believe God’s Word is true and obey it 100% to the best of our ability.  If we do not, we are in danger of eternal condemnation.

Jesus spoke to this point when he told the apostles in Mark 16:15-16, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.  He that believes and is baptized shall be saved, but he who does not  believe will be condemned.”  Jesus stresses the importance of our belief by stating that those who do not believe the preaching of God’s Word will be condemned.  However, it is comforting to know if we believe God’s Word and are baptized according to His Word, we can be saved and have eternal salvation.

Believing God’s Word and that Jesus Christ is His Son is so important because this essential and simple belief provides the avenue for baptism and in turn, the eternal salvation God wants us all to have.
