Confessing Your Faith Not only does God want us to hear His Word, believe in His Son, and repent of our sins, He asks us to make a public confession of our faith in Him and His promise of eternal salvation. What good is our belief in Jesus if we cannot affirm what our heart believes before our fellow man? The Bible clearly illustrates this for us in Romans 10:9-10, “If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes to righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made to salvation.” This passage highlights the importance of an individual’s confession of their faith in Jesus in relationship to eternal salvation. God tells us our confession is so vital to our salvation that we must make this good confession in order to be saved; without making it, we are lost. A clear example of the necessity of public confession is provided for us by Luke in Acts 8:26-40. These verses record for us the conversion of the Ethiopian eunuch. After Philip preaches Jesus to him (verse 35), we read in verses 36 and 37, “Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, ‘See, here is water, what hinders me from being baptized?’ Then Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’ And he answered and said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’” Verse 38 then tells of the eunuch’s baptism. Jesus Himself taught the need for man to confess His name before others. Matthew records this teaching of Jesus in Matthew 10:32-33, “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” It is a scary thought to be denied by Jesus Himself, but Jesus tells us how important it is that we make the good confession a public confession. Confessing our faith and belief in Jesus Christ His Son is so vital to our eternal salvation that God’s Word tells us without publicly confessing our faith, we will be lost. However, once we make the good confession, we are ready to be baptized for the remission of our sins begin living righteously for God! |
