Hearing God’s Word In order for us to know how to obtain the eternal salvation God desires for all mankind, we have to read and understand God’s Word. (See the related Bible Study on the authority of the Scriptures.) In God’s Word we can find all we need to know in order to be obedient to God and His will. God’s Word tells us in II Timothy 3:16-17, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” God’s Word is so important to us because it provides everything we need to know in order to be saved. Paul tells us in Romans 1:16, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth.” This is a powerful statement! Only God’s Word provides the way to salvation; nothing more and nothing less. In Acts chapter 10 we are given the example of Cornelius and how he obtained eternal salvation. He was told by an angel of God to send for the apostle Peter in order for Peter to tell him what he needed to do to be saved. Cornelius understood the importance of hearing what God had to say by stating in Acts 10:33, “Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God.” Jesus told his disciples the seriousness of people hearing God’s Word by stating in Mark 6:11, “And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear you, when you depart thence, shake off the dust under your feet for a witness against them. Verily I say unto, It shall be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment, than for that city.” We need to hear and understand God’s Word because if we do not first hear the Word of God, then the faith that is necessary to receive salvation is not produced. Paul writes for us in Romans 10:17, “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” And if we do not have faith, we cannot obtain the eternal salvation God wants for us. Hearing God’s Word is so important because without this an individual has no idea how to obtain the eternal salvation God wants all of us to receive. |
