Repentance

According to Webster’s the word repentance is defined as the act of turning from sin and dedicating oneself to the amendment of one’s life.  Our eternal salvation is dependant upon realizing the need for repentance.  Acts 2:38 states, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.”  Repentance is required by God from individuals in order to go to Heaven.

Jesus said He came to earth to show man the need for repentance.  Jesus states in Matthew 9:13, “But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy and not sacrifice.’ For I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners, to repentance.”  Jesus also tells us in Luke 13:3, “I tell you no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish.”  Based on His words, He wants us to repent of our sins, but we have a choice to either repent or perish.  This choice we are given applies to ALL individuals.  No one is exempt from this.  To illustrate this point further, Acts 17:30 states, “Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent.”  All men?  That includes you and me.

Thankfully, God does not want us to perish; He wants us to make the right choice and repent of our sins.  This is demonstrated in 2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”  Romans 2:4 also tell us His goodness leads us to repentance, “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”

Even though God wants everyone to have the opportunity to repent, we should be afraid if we fail to repent of our sins.  In 2 Corinthians 5:10-11 we read, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.  Knowing, therefore, the terror of the Lord, we persuade men.”

Repentance is a change; a change of mind resulting in a change in action.  Repentance is to understand the way I am living is wrong and I want to do it the Lord’s way.
